Our artisan partners weaving magic in Teotitlan de Our artisan partners weaving magic in Teotitlan de valle, Mexico. Each large rug takes more than a week to finish and everyone in the family is involved in the process. They begin by spinning the wool and collecting plants in the mountains for dyeing. When the children have collected enough wood to make the fire and boil the water, the coloring begins. The plants are boiled and then left to sit overnight. The next day they re-boil it and then they are ready to put in the natural colored wool. They leave the wool in the water for different periods of time depending on how strong they want to color to be. They are then hung out to dry in the sun to be ready for weaving. Nakawe supports these age old traditions that are the roots of Oaxacan culture and heritage. All of our products are ethically made and sustainable through our artisan partnerships and dedication to using sustainable materials and methods of production. #nakawetrading #sustainable #ethical #homewares 📷 @chrisandman

A beautiful image of the process behind Oaxacan cl A beautiful image of the process behind Oaxacan clay pottery. 📷 @chrisandman Traditionally, the clay is molded by hand or on a potters wheel. After it is shaped, the pieces are set to dry for up to three weeks. If the piece is to be polished so that it turns out shiny black when finished, it is polished when the piece is almost dry. The surface of the piece is lightly moistened and then rubbed with a curved quartz stone. This compacts the surface of the clay and creates the metallic sheen and dark color during firing. The pieces are then fired in this above ground kiln, using wood fires that heat the objects to extremely high temperatures. #nakawetrading #preservingculture #traditionalart #oaxaca #mexico
