These handmade Chiapas blouses are a product that reflects the true nature of our brand Nakawé and our vision. We decided to go to Chiapas many years ago in search of women who embroidered. We didn’t want to just buy blouses from the people in the city that where taking advantage of the indigenous communities. So we hired a car and drove through many small pueblos until we found a lady on the street who said she could help us. She took us too her home and before anything else we all shared tea and food as our children played together. She then showed us one very small piece of embroidery. That’s all she had in her home as she didn’t have money to buy materials. We talked about our ideas and our designs and how they could be executed using her age old embroidery techniques. She asked us what we would pay her and we told her we would pay her whatever she asked. We explained to her that the most important part of what we did was making sure everyone involved in the project was happy and benefiting from It and that it would help to preserve traditional art and culture in Mexico. She smiled and went to get all her sisters and daughters. They told us with confidence that they could make our designs and that they where happy because they wouldn’t have to travel very long distances anymore to look for work and that they would be paid fairly. Most importantly their daughters were encouraged, by the artisan partnership we made, to continue to see their traditional art as a viable means to support themselves. We started off with 100m of fabric, some thread and a powerful vision of the future. 5 years in and our artisan partnership is stronger then ever. Every women involved, from the designer, to the maker, to the buyer is essential in the process and benefits from it. This is Nakawé. Made ethically & sustainably by women, for women.

Introducing our new line of Mexican handwoven hamm Introducing our new line of Mexican handwoven hammocks. Using centuries-old methods, all our hammocks are handmade by Mayan women in the Yucatan of Mexico. They can be made from 100% cotton or Nylon depending on the climate you live in. Our artisan partners are primarily women who weave hammocks in their spare time from home. This allows them to supplement their family income whilst continuing to care for their children. When you purchase a Mayan-made hammock, you are contributing directly to family income, supporting the self-sufficiency of the women and the development of the whole community. Both Cotton and Nylon hammocks have their advantages. The nylon is more resistant to humidity and outdoor living. The perfect option for a rental space as you gain the wow factor but with low maintenance. The colors are also very pleasing to the eye and are often used as decorative pieces on the wall. The cotton hammocks are softer and more forgiving against the skin. When we started Nakawé we always dreamed to take a professional photographer with us to capture the magic of Oaxaca. The culture…. The delicious food… The people and their stories and most of all the incredibly talented artisans. When we asked @chrisandman to come with us we had no idea what we would be able to accomplish. The work of the artisans is a labor of love and timing consuming. We wanted to capture the entire process and the story behind each piece or art as best we Could. All we could do was pray we would be in the right place at the right time every time. These photos prove that dreams do come true ✨✨ During countless visits with the Martinez family we have come to know a lot about their unique passion for working with clay. Their relationship and respect for the land and ancestral Zapotec traditions are quite remarkable. We can find their symbolism in their work, in their motives; and by mixing this with reduction and kiln firing techniques, they result in artistic and daily-use pieces with a unique personality. Each piece of clay pottery we receive is a gift as they can only make so many pieces and the demand for their work is high.
