The Peyote cactus, also known as Jicuri, the plant of life, is a delicate cactus that speaks of deep and closed relationships with the gods. Peyote is the sacred medicine the Huichol people traditionally consume to make a connection with the spiritual world during ceremonies.

Each year, Huichol families, individuals, and shamans take a pilgrimage to the desert area of San Luis Potosí in order to worship and commune with the deities. During their journey, shamans will consume peyote and replicate their visions onto art that represents the religious communication between the Huichol people and the deities.

The significance of this pilgrimage and the deities is represented in the decorations of almost everything the Huichol create.

Life is a constant object of prayer for the Huichol.

From the time they are children, they  learn how to communicate with the spirit world through symbols and rituals, thus for the Huichol,  beadwork is more than mere aesthetic expression. The symbols in the jewelry reflect the Huichol culture and shamanic tradition. Like icons, they are documents of ancient wisdom.

Since their written language was only recently developed, the symbols were the Huichol people’s primary form of communication and continue to preserve their sacred traditions, myths, and religion.
